Overview

Friends since high school, 20-somethings Kaleil Isaza Tuzman and Tom Herman have an idea: a Web site for people to conduct business with municipal governments. This documentary tracks the rise and fall of govWorks.com from May of 1999 to December of 2000, and the trials the business brings to the relationship of these best friends. Kaleil raises the money, Tom's the technical chief. A third partner wants a buy out; girlfriends come and go; Tom's daughter needs attention. And always the need for cash and for improving the site. Venture capital comes in by the millions. Kaleil is on C-SPAN, CNN, and magazine covers. Will the business or the friendship crash first?

"" is one of the most involving pieces of eavesdropping you're likely to experience, thanks to the access granted to the documentary filmmakers Jehane Noujaim and Chris Hegedus. Their subjects, Kaleil Isaza Tuzman and Tom Herman, want to marry the public and private sectors in a new dot-com venture, govWorks, a Web site that will allow citizens to go online for their government transactions. The viewer wants Mr. Tuzman and Mr. Herman to succeed, but it is evident that they don't have the tools to make govWorks thrive. The drama is in the interactions at the office, where an early crucial misstep costs the partners an important alliance. They fear that mistake will come back to haunt them. As the bad vibes mount, the camera remains, benignly recording the disaster. -- Elvis Mitchell.
The friends are named Kaleil Isaza Tuzman and Tom Herman. Their idea is so compelling that Tuzman quits a job at Goldman Sachs to move to the Internet. The story starts in May 1999, when instant Web millionaires were a dime a dozen, and ends in January 2001. The documentary's last shots were filmed only three weeks before it premiered at Sundance, still wet from the lab. As an inside view of the bursting of the Internet bubble, "" is definitive.
