The first Mardi Gras in America was celebrated in Mobile, Alabama in 1703. In 2007, it is still racially segregated. Margaret Brown, herself a daughter of Mobile, escorts us into the parallel hearts of the city's two carnivals. With unprecedented access, she traces the exotic world of secret mystic societies and centuries-old traditions and pageantry; diamond-encrusted crowns, voluminous, hand-sewn gowns, surreal masks and enormous paper mache floats. Against this opulent backdrop, she uncovers a tangled web of historical violence and power dynamics, elusive forces that keep this hallowed tradition organized along enduring color lines..

COURTESY CINEMA GUILD.Though she may appear to casual observers as simply a gifted young chronicler of Southern culture, Margaret Brown's talents extend beyond that. The daughter of Milton Brown, the songwriter who penned the catchy title song for the Clint Eastwood vehicle Every Which Way But Loose, Brown was raised in Mobile, Alabama, and since graduating from university has been highly active behind the camera. In the past decade, Brown's filmmaking career has been impressively diverse: she first produced the Student Academy Award-winning short Six Miles of Eight Feet (1998), then wrote and directed the narrative short 99 Threadwaxing the same year, and has since acted as on the Sundance award-winning doc Ice Fishing (2000) and produced her father's first film as a director, the comedy western musical Mi Amigo (2002). "In Mobile's Mardi Gras, the blacksand the whites get along fine." So states an elderly masked man in the openingminutes of The Order Of Myths, a documentary about the coastal Alabama city's300-year-old Carnival celebrations, and how they reflect the state of racerelations in the 21st-century South. The film's title comes from the name of anexclusive Mobile social club that marches in the Mardi Gras parade and holdsdebutante balls in full masquerade. But the title is also meant to refer to theillusions people hold. Mobile's demographics run 48 percent white and 48percent black, and for centuries, the city's two halves have administered theirCarnivals through separate councils, with separate courts and separate kingsand queens. Yet a member of one of Mobile's secret white societies proudlyboasts that unlike in New Orleans, "there's only one queen in Mobile.".
